The solar industry’s leading trade group released new standards Monday aimed at ensuring ethical and transparent sales practices as state attorneys general in several states claim that companies are misleading consumers about rooftop systems and renewable programs.

The Solar Energy Industries Association standards — the first of 11 the organization is planning for the industry — will be used for a new SEIA certification program that solar companies and individual salespeople can opt into.

“These groundbreaking standards reflect the solar and storage industry’s commitment to ensuring every customer has a great experience going solar,” said SEIA president and CEO Abigail Ross Hopper in a statement. “Going solar with a SEIA-certified installer will give customers the confidence they need to make the best decision for their family.”
