House Republicans are putting more resources into trying to unseat embattled Texas Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar.
Cuellar, one of the oil and natural gas industry’s top allies in the Democratic Party, was indicted last month on federal bribery, conspiracy and money laundering charges, and is being investigated by the House Ethics Committee. The accusations stem from his dealings with an Azerbaijan-controlled energy company and a Mexico-based bank.
His 28th District has a Democratic lean, but Cuellar’s legal troubles have given the National Republican Congressional Committee new hope.
The committee added him Monday to its list of Democrats whose seats they are targeting. The list now numbers 40, including two other new additions: seats currently held by retiring Reps. Annie Kuster of New Hampshire and Kathy Manning of North Carolina.
