Morale in the organization is “at an all-time low,” one Greenpeace employee said after the green group replaced its leader with little public explanation.

Greenpeace USA quietly replaced its executive director with temporary leaders this month, offering little public explanation about her departure.

Ebony Twilley Martin, who took over as Greenpeace USA’s executive director a little over a year ago, “has transitioned from her role,” Greenpeace Fund Board Chair Liz Gilchrist and Greenpeace Inc. Board Chair Jakada Imani said in a statement dated July 19 and shared with POLITICO’s E&E News on Tuesday.

The boards asked Greenpeace Campaign Director Rolf Skar and Deputy General Counsel Deepa Padmanabha to lead the Greenpeace organizations as acting co-executive directors until an interim executive is named, Gilchrist and Imani said in the statement.

Twilley Martin’s exit from the group came after she was placed on leave from the organization in June, E&E News previously reported. Twilley Martin’s allies last month said her absence was due to a power struggle fueled by internal divisions over an expensive lawsuit filed against the organization by an oil company.
