TALLAHASSEE, Florida — Energy justice groups told the Public Service Commission on Wednesday that Florida Power & Light Co. should drastically expand its energy conservation programs beyond a pending proposal for the next 10 years.

The details: MacKenzie D. Marcelin of the group Florida Rising filed testimony in the energy conservation cases of six utilities regulated by the PSC. The filing by the Earthjustice law firm begins laying out the intervenor cases against utility proposals.

Marcelin, the group’s climate justice director, proposed doubling or tripling the energy conservation goals of Florida Power & Light, the state’s largest utility with 5.8 million customers. She praised Duke Energy Florida for having more aggressive conservation goals.

“FPL is the largest and wealthiest utility in the State, and serving most Floridians, it should set the example to other utilities for good energy efficiency goals,” Marcelin stated.
